THE A5 BOOK REVIEW

A Trip to the Beach is the story of a brave Vermont couple, Melinda and Bob Blanchard, who decide to chuck it all in search of a tropical island life by moving to Anguilla to start a restaurant.  It isn’t the most elegantly written book, but the story of their challenges to build their new business amidst the peculiarities and personalities of a small Caribbean island is worth a read.  Unsurprisingly, all is not simple in paradise.  They struggle to find supplies, to deal with officious government officials, to manage quirky staff, and ultimately, to recover from a major hurricane.  The Blanchards of course do fall in love with the rhythms and oddities of their new community, as you would expect, and they manage to create an impressive restaurant.  Several of the popular recipes from the restaurant are included in the book.

GREAT QUOTES FROM A TRIP TO THE BEACH

“Unlike its neighbors, Anguilla (rhymes with vanilla and pronounced Ann-gwilla) had no casinos, no duty free shopping, and no cruise ships.  Visitors here looked for less, not more.  They tended to arrive one or two at a time and not in packs.  Their intentions were simple: to walk on the beach, go snorkeling, read a book, take a dip in the water. ”
