CARIBBEAN, MEXICO, CENTRAL & SOUTH AMERICA - TRAVEL GUIDES

He looked across the sea and knew how alone he was now.  But he could see the prisms in the deep dark water and the line stretching ahead and the strange undulation of the calm.  The clouds were building up now for the trade wind and he looked ahead and saw a flight of wild ducks etching themselves against the sky over the water, then blurring, then etching again and he knew no man was ever alone on the sea.
- Ernest Hemingway,
The Old Man and the Sea

book cover of The Old Patagonian Express

The Old Patagonian Express, by Paul Theroux

One of the better travelogues by renowned travel writer Paul Theroux is The Old Patagonian Express, the story of his train trip from Massachusetts all the way down to the most southern tip of Argentina.  Theroux’s writing revolves around the local characters he meets along the way, people that are both interesting and representative of the place he is visiting.  It is a brutally honest, funny, and insightful book.  Click here for our review of The Old Patagonian Express.

book cover of Road Fever

Road Fever, by Tim Cahill

Road Fever is the account of adventure travel writer Tim Cahill’s quest, along with a professional driving partner, to drive from the southernmost part of South America to the northernmost tip of Alaska in a world record time.  The pair don’t of course spend much time meeting people and experiencing local culture, but it is funny and well-written, and certainly an interesting read.  We generally recommend most of Tim Cahill's writing.  Click here for our review of Road Fever.
