UNITED STATES & CANADA TRAVEL GUIDES

The United States and Canada may be just two countries, but there is simply a ton to see and do.  Iconic large cities, majestic mountain ranges, beautiful never-ending plains, and some surprisingly different cultures.  Most people come to visit just one place at a time, but we highly recommend taking an extended road trip.  Some of the most beautiful and authentically American and Canadian places are best experienced by car.

Travels with Charley

One of the best travel books about American road trips comes from one of America's best authors - John Steinbeck.  In this legendary travelogue, Steinbeck takes his poodle Charley across the country in his camper van he names Rocinante, after Don Quixote's horse.  According to his son, Steinbeck suffered from a heart condition and knew he was dying, and this was a last chance to explore the country.  In any case, his quest makes for an amazing and funny read and a great insight into the hearts and minds of the country in 1960.  Click here to see our review of Travels with Charley.

The New York Times: 36 Hours USA & Canada

One of our favorite travel columns is a regular weekly feature from the New York Times called “36 Hours”.  Each article explains a recommended itinerary for someone who has a short weekend to explore a location for the first time.  These articles are now grouped together into several fantastic books, with one for the US & Canada, one for Europe, one for Latin America, and one for Asia & Oceania.  Click here to see our review of 36 Hours.
