GREECE - TRAVEL GUIDES

"I first visited Greece as an 18-year-old, sleeping on the decks of slow-moving ferries, living on olives and feta, and constantly salt-crusted from swimming in the deep blue Aegean. But it was a starlit performance at the 3rd-century BC Theatre of Epidavros that sealed my love of the country. Watching the ancient Greek drama unfold before me as I sat on stone seats worn smooth by thousands of years of use, I felt caught in a moment that seemed to sidestep time. I love Greece because magical moments like that one aren’t so hard to find here."
- Korina Miller, Lonely Planet travel writer

TRAVELING TO GREECE

We highly recommend a long trip to Greece, with a visit to Athens, the incomparable Aegean islands, especially Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete.  The beaches and shops are fantastic, but we do recommend spending some time touring the archeological sites as well.  Here are our recommendations on the best travel books for Greece.

A5 RECOMMENDATIONS

Lonely Planet: Greece

Greece is a superb travel destination, famous for breathtakingly blue water, a myriad of islands and villages, and thousands of years of history.  We recommend taking along the Lonely Planet guidebook.  They are one of the world’s best publisher of travel books, known for the depth of their coverage and for the strength of their local knowledge.

DK Eyewitness Travel: The Greek Islands

We love the DK Eyewitness Travel series but typically recommend these books for travel to bigger cities, primarily because of their strong coverage of museums and tourist attractions, their beautiful photos and custom maps.  We are impressed though with their coverage of the Greek Islands.  There is a ton of helpful content on the nuances of each island and solid information on how to make the most of any trip.

Best Kept Secrets of the Greek Islands

Every coffee table should have a book with beautiful photos of Greece, and one of the best is The Best Kept Secrets of the Greek Islands, by Diana Farr Lewis.  This hard-cover book encompasses all six of the island groups in Greece, highlighting amazing landscapes, beautiful villages, and of course the rich blue ocean.  This is a nice gift and a nice souvenir for those lucky enough to have been to this lovely region of the world.

It's All Greek To Me, by John Mole

It’s All Greek to Me is a humorous story by John Mole, his dream of an idyllic life in a beautiful town in Greece, and the reality of his true experience.  His family was less than thrilled with the ruin of a home they purchased in a near deserted village, with no water or electricity, and their adventures don’t end after they move in.  It is a predictable but nice story that shares the warmth and generosity of the Greek people and the “simple” life.
