THE A5 BOOK REVIEW

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (or Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as released in England) is the first book in the uber-famous series of Harry Potter novels written by the British author J.K. Rowling.  Harry Potter is a young orphan in England who is accepted to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry soon after learning of his magical heritage, where he quickly makes some close friends.  The group soon is thrown into a deep struggle against an emerging dark wizard named Lord Voldemort who killed Harry’s parents when Harry was a baby.  The book was immediately a global sensation, loved for the dramatic story, the wonderful setting, and the coming of age theme.  We highly recommend the entire book series, the movies and everything associated with the Harry Potter franchise, both for children ages 8+ and adults, and especially for someone planning to visit England.

THE HARRY POTTER SERIES BY J.K. ROWLING

The creator of the Harry Potter series is J.K Rowling, a researcher for Amnesty International who had the idea for Harry Potter while on a delayed train to London.  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was her first book, taking her from relative poverty to become one of the most successful authors of all time, with sales of over 500 million copies worldwide.  The series of eight movies is one of the highest-grossing film series of all time, and the Harry Potter series is considered one of the cornerstones of young adult literature.

GREAT QUOTES FROM HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE

"It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends."

"I hope you're pleased with yourselves.  We could all have been killed - or worse, expelled.  Now if you don't mind, I'm going to bed."

INTERESTING LINKS:

  • We here at A5 always recommend reading the books first, but the movies are also fantastic.  Here is a list of the movie names at Cinema Blend, so you can watch them in order.
  • The cultural phenomenon of Harry Potter has of course spawned numerous websites for those who just can't enough with the books and the movies.  Two of the best are Mugglenet.com and The Leaky Cauldron.  One of the best website's of course is J.K. Rowling's own site - Pottermore.com.
