THE A5 BOOK REVIEWHumans of New York is a massively popular photo blog featuring empathetic real-life interviews with regular people on the streets of New York City. The blog was started by Brandon Stanton in 2010 by simply approaching people on the street and asking them for a personal interview. Small quotes from the interview appear next to the portrait of the featured person. The blog, loved now by millions for its candid view on humanity and for the vibrant characters so representative of the spirit of the city, grew to be a worldwide phenomenon with a viral explosion of followers on Facebook. In 2013, Stanton produced a beautiful hardcover book with over 400 featured people, including some exclusive portraits and interviews. The book hit the top of the New York Times bestsellers list almost immediately. The Humans of New York book is nice for the coffee table and a perfect present for those who love the color and personalities of New York City.

ABOUT BRANDON STANTON

The founder of Humans of New York, Brandon Stanton, originally had planned on taking 10,000 portraits and tying them to a map of the city, but the project evolved as he began to include stories about each person. Stanton was a bond trader in Chicago who lost his job, prompting him to discover a passion for street photography, something that became a worldwide phenomenon. In December 2012, Stanton took his popular concept overseas to spend two weeks in Iran, exposing many Americans for the first time to the daily lives of normal Iranian people. He spent a week in Boston after the April 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, traveled all over the globe on a 50-day “World Tour” in partnership with the United Nations, and traveled to Europe in 2015 to interview refugees in an effort to increase awareness for this crisis. TIME magazine named him as one of their “30 Under 30 Changing the World”. And in 2013, Stanton released a new book called Humans of New York: Stories with all new people and longer, more personal stories.
