THE A5 BOOK REVIEWJonathan Livingston Seagull is a short fictional best-selling novel published in 1970 by Richard Bach about a seagull who desperately aspires to rise above the materialism and monotony of life to do what no one else in his flock can; he wants to fly. His unwillingness to conform ultimately leads him to be cast out of their society. Undeterred, Jonathan continues to strive, until he is met by two loving seagulls who can take him to a “higher plane of existence” found through perfection of knowledge, the importance of freedom, and remaining true to one’s self. His learning then extends to the importance of forgiveness and respect, allowing him to return to help younger gulls also reach their dreams. Interestingly, Bach added a 4th part to the story many years later in 2014, inspired by a near-death experience he had with a plane crash. It is of course a fable about reaching for a higher purpose and not everyone will buy the underlying message of self-help, but we recommend giving the book a chance.

Heaven is being perfect. -And that isn't flying a thousand miles an hour, or a million, or flying at the speed of light. Because any number is a limit, and perfection doesn't have limits. Perfect speed, my son, is being there.”
