THE A5 BOOK REVIEWCelebrated travel writer Bill Bryson’s love for travel started with two summers he spent traveling around Europe in the early 1970s, searching for beer, women, and a little life experience. Approximately twenty years later, he re-packed his backpack and decided to go back to retrace his journey. He starts in Norway in search of the Northern Lights, then making his way through much of Europe, ending in Istanbul. His point of view is authentically American, and the commentary is both funny for those who have visited Europe or just wanting to see it through Bryson's point of view. Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe has less detailed historical background than many of his other books, but all of the biting and honest humor that has made his writing so popular.

PREFACE TO NEITHER HERE NOR THERE“What is it about maps? I could look at them all day, earnestly studying the names of towns and villages I have never heard of and will never visit, tracing the course of obscure rivers, checking elevations, consulting the marginal notes to see what a little circle with a flag on it signifies (a Burg or Schloss) and what’s the difference between a pictogram of an airplane with a circle around it and one without (one is a Flughafen, the other a Flugplatz), issuing small profound ‘Hmmmm’s’ and nodding my head gravely without having the faintest idea why.”
