THE A5 BOOK REVIEWThose who like the late Anthony Bourdain and his travel television shows will also like his second travelogue, No Reservations: Around the World on an Empty Stomach. This journal follows the crew of the popular Travel Channel television show (of the same name) around the world, providing a very authentic snapshot of real life in each of the regions they visit, centered of course on food. Unlike his first travel book, A Cook’s Tour, this book includes just a short description of each trip, supported by a lot of photography. But like all of his writing, the commentary is outrageously honest and funny, whether pontificating on the cultural importance of taking up the generous offer of an alcoholic beverage or outlining in detail the relative level of cleanliness in regional bathrooms. One of the most interesting stories provides the backstory on their scary evacuation from war-torn Beirut. While we definitely recommend reading A Cook’s Tour first, this is also worth a read.

GREAT QUOTES FROM NO RESERVATIONS AROUND THE WORLD ON AN EMPTY STOMACH“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.”
