THE A5 BOOK REVIEWThe Journey’s Echo: Selected Travel Writings is a collection of observations and impressions from one of the world’s most prominent travel writers, Dame Freya Stark. The title alone pulled us in. Born in 1893, Stark broke from her rather conservative upbringing to discover the pleasures of traveling in the Middle East, ultimately breaking boundaries and making history for a Western woman and a non-Arabian with the depth of her explorations in this region. Even more notable is the depth and quality of her writing, with over two dozen travel books published. This collection is an amazing selection of her best essays, selected with the sole purpose of sharing her talent, starting from some letters from Syria in 1927 all the way through to a trip to the Tigris in 1958.
