THE A5 BOOK REVIEW

The Journey’s Echo: Selected Travel Writings is a collection of observations and impressions from one of the world’s most prominent travel writers, Dame Freya Stark.  The title alone pulled us in.  Born in 1893, Stark broke from her rather conservative upbringing to discover the pleasures of traveling in the Middle East, ultimately breaking boundaries and making history for a Western woman and a non-Arabian with the depth of her explorations in this region.  Even more notable is the depth and quality of her writing, with over two dozen travel books published.  This collection is an amazing selection of her best essays, selected with the sole purpose of sharing her talent, starting from some letters from Syria in 1927 all the way through to a trip to the Tigris in 1958.

There is so much to choose from when looking at Freya Stark's work, but readers can't go wrong with her most famous book, The Valleys of the Assassins, which was recognized as a classic piece of travel writing when published in 1934.  She is an amazing woman, and fans will also enjoy her biography, Passionate Nomad: The Life of Freya Stark.  Click here to learn more about Freya Stark and her work.

GREAT QUOTES FROM THE JOURNEY'S ECHO

"The observations and impressions gathered together in this book have been selected from the writings of one of the most remarkable women of our age - a poet of travel whose Muse has been wholly Arabian in plumage and whose books span nearly half a century of historical time."
- Lawrence Durrell, foreword to
The Journey's Echo
