THE A5 BOOK REVIEWThose who love travel writing typically love Paul Theroux, and so it is hard not to like To the Ends of the Earth, his hand-picked “best-of” selection of stories from six of his best known travel books. The most interesting and true experiences when traveling often revolve more around meeting local people than seeing the popular sights, and few writers better share those experiences than Theroux. His way to see the world goes through Mr. Bhardwaj, the chatty civil servant on the railcar to Simla, Mr. Chatterlee from Calcutta, and Mr. Wong the tooth mechanic. The journeys covered in this book include train trips through Asia and South America, as well as a long trip around the coast of the United Kingdom. Paul Theroux is one of our favorite travel writers, and our recommendation is to ideally to start with The Great Railway Bazaar. But for those who want a taste of his best writing, To the Ends of the Earth is also a good choice.

LEAVE YOUR OWN REVIEW HEREINTRODUCTION TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH"The trip recorded in The Great Railway Bazaar was the trip I took, and the manner of my journey and my way of writing about it became my method in all my future travel books. I changed the names of some people I wished to protect, but many of the names I left as was. My problem in writing the book was finding a form for it - a structure. In the end I simply hung it on a series of train journeys. I had never read a book quite like the book I was writing. This worried me, as well as making me hopeful. The writing of the book took the same amount of time as the trip itself, four months."
