THE A5 BOOK REVIEWIn Travels, the best-selling author Michael Crichton shares a personal memoir in the context of his many adventures traveling around the globe. His funny, incredibly vivid, and thought-provoking stories span both physical travel and his experience with mysticism, including fortune telling, seeing auras, and other out-of-body experiences. Crichton says he often goes to some distant region of the world to be reminded of who he really is, and this theme of self-discovery permeates throughout. The book also includes an interesting look back at his time in medical school at Harvard. Crichton then takes us across the globe, with his first trip to Bangkok, scuba diving in Bonaire and Tahiti, an attempt to attend the Sultan of Pahang's birthday in Malaysia, an elephant "attack" in Kenya, his experience in Rwanda to see the gorillas, a climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro, a trek into a remote area of Pakistan's Karakoram Mountain, time spent in New Guinea, and a visit to Hunza, known as the original Shangri-La. He also shares some of his experience working with Sean Connery in The Great Train Robbery, a movie he directed in Ireland. His post-script opinion on the potential realities of paranormal phenomena is worth reading, on its own. Crichton's book doesn't seem to get enough credit on lists of the best travel books, but it should. Absolutely worth reading, even for those younger readers not familiar with his more popular books.

GREAT QUOTES FROM MICHAEL CRICHTON'S TRAVELS"In my everyday life, I often felt a stifling awareness of the purpose behind everything I did. Every book I read, every movie I saw, every lunch and dinner I attended seemed to have a reason behind it. From time to time, I felt the urge to do something for no reason at all. I conceived these trips as vacations - as respite from my ongoing life - but that wasn't how they turned out. Eventually, I realized that many of the most importance changes of my life had come about because of my travel experiences. For, however tame when compared with the excursions of real adventurers, these trips were genuine adventures for me: I struggled with my fears and limitations, and I learned whatever I needed to learn."
"Stripped of your ordinary surroundings, your friends, your daily routines, your refrigerator full of your food, your closet full of your clothes, you are forced into direct experience. Such direct experience inevitably makes you aware of who it is that is having the experience. That's not always comfortable, but it is always invigorating." INTERESTING LINKS:
