TURKEY, CROATIA & SLOVENIA - TRAVEL GUIDES

"Culture is mix.  Culture means a mix of things from other sources.  And my town, Istanbul, was this kind of mix. Istanbul, in fact, and my work, is a testimony to the fact that East and West combine cultural gracefully, or sometimes in an anarchic way, came together, and that is what we should search for."
- Orhan Pamuk

TRAVELING TO TURKEY, CROATIA AND SLOVENIA

Croatia and Turkey are now generally recognized as attractive travel destinations, but it is still possible to have a less crowded and less expensive travel experience.  Istanbul is an extraordinary city, and there are plenty of smaller towns and amazing beaches to discover.  Slovenia is a lesser-known treasure.  Here are our recommendations on the best travel books for this region.

A5 RECOMMENDATIONS

Lonely Planet: Turkey

Lonely Planet is our favorite travel guide for this region (and quite frankly for most regions), with specific books focusing on Croatia, Turkey, Montenegro and Slovenia.  We like their emphasis on the culture and history, their local insight into on lodging, attractions and cuisine, and the honesty of their reviews and recommendations.  Travelers can always trust Lonely Planet.

Rick Steves: Croatia & Slovenia

First-time visitors to Croatia & Slovenia might prefer the Rick Steves guidebook.  This series is always a good choice for travel in Europe, best known for its specific recommendations on what to see and do and how best to save time and money.  Steves only recommends what he feels is best, which can be especially helpful when exploring an unknown place.

DK Eyewitness Travel: Istanbul

Istanbul is a wonderful and unique place to visit, with an incredibly rich history and so much to experience.  We recommend the DK Eyewitness Travel guidebook.  DK Eyewitness Travel is a great choice for bigger cities; they do a great job explaining neighborhoods and cultural highlights with a focus on custom maps and beautiful color photography.  There is also a great section on street food.

Street Foods of Turkey

Turkey is known for the variety and quality of its street food, an important and delicious part of this rich and vibrant daily life.  Street Foods of Turkey showcases this food and this culture with recipes, descriptions of the history and traditions, and beautiful color photographs.  The diversity of food is organized by season, with an extra section on those foods available all year long.
