THE A5 BOOK REVIEWAA Gill is Away is a collection of irreverent and insightful travel writing from one of England’s most read critics and columnists. Gill’s weekly restaurant reviews and commentary on television for the Sunday Times of London were unsparingly brutal, painfully accurate, and always wonderfully funny. When he was off traveling, his column would simply say “AA Gill is away”. hence the title. His travel writing is just as good as his newspaper column, whether covering famine-stricken Africa, the Andaman Sea off the coast of Thailand, Tokyo, India, Iceland, or even the pornography studios in Southern California. Not everyone will love the stinging nature of some of his snarky observations, but his writing is also poignant and insightful. His book is one of our top recommendation for funny travel writing.

LEAVE YOUR OWN REVIEW HEREGREAT QUOTES FROM AA GILL IS AWAY"The question you need to ask travel writers isn't "where did you go to" but "where did you start from." Observations of abroad often tell you more about the observer and his culture than the people and the place he's commenting on. So you should know I'm a mongrel Scot, born in Edinburgh, partially English, part Indian, and that this is a collection of pieces that were mostly written for British papers and magazines. My home is London."
