THE A5 BOOK REVIEWA.A. Gill is one of the most widely read columnists in Britain, best known now for his work as a restaurant reviewer and television critic for The Sunday Times but also for his sharp and hilariously irreverent travel writing. Previous Convictions is one of his travel writing collections, published in 2008 from his travels "here and there". The "here" is the United Kingdom, with essays on the famous Glastonbury music festival, golf, hunting, shooting, the theater, and an intriguing visit to the mecca for those who love exploring, The Royal Geographic Society. The "there" covers about everywhere else. Gill's escapades include Haiti at the beginning of the coup against Aristide, Guatemala, Brazil, Pakistan, India, Vietnam, Oman, a tense visit to the Green Zone in Iraq, Sudan, South Africa, a weekend in New York sampling gyms, Las Vegas (where irony goes to die), Texas, Greenland, a priceless visit to the homosexual haven of Mykonos with the extremely straight Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear, and Amsterdam. His four page summation of Africa is incredibly insightful; "Africans have buckets of sympathy but thimbles of empathy". All in all, the book is highly recommended.

- A.A. Gill, "South Africa", Previous Convictions "And then there are the bottoms. What can I say? The finest, ripest, richest, most joyous arses anywhere. Bottom is a national obsession. It should be on the flag." - A.A. Gill, "Brazil", Previous Convictions INTERESTING LINKS:
